The large flowered Papaver somniferum is an easy to grow annual and because of its taproot only for direct sowing. Just scatter the seeds in autumn or early spring, through borders and along edges and wait for the impressive flowers.

Papaver somniferum ‘Black Swan’

Lanciniatum type: the flowers are double to semi-double and frilled with numerous finely cut petals in shining black or better dark burgundy red.
